Thomas was a landowner in England. Tradition says that he came from Belstone, Devonshire, England, and that he was a wealthy land owner. He and his sons went to London, but being nonconformest to the King and Church, they were spied on by KingCharles I, spies. Thomas then an old man, was dragged through the streets with great indignity. His hores and sheep were seized. His children were also dragged and fined. Thomas was put in prison and this caused his death.[] Languished in prison where he contracted a fever of which he eventually died. Belonged to the class who were stigmatized as Puritans on account of the purity and simplicity of their forms of worship. Though he was a wealthy landowner, he was persecuted by the civil and religious authorities under the direction ofArchbishop Laud, and that he was maltreated, improvished and imprisoned, and finally ruined in health(as well as financially) by the indignities and hardships forced upon him by the intolerant church party in power. This relationship as son of William Blyss has not been proven. It is assumed in a number of published chart, but ther is no real evidence to support it. Likewise there is no evidence to support the Bliss family in Belstone or that they werewealthy landowners. (see notes on Richard Blysse) |
