Julius Kaufman "J. K." Smith, 76, of 412 Pine Ave., Apt. 2, was dead on arrival at 8 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 1997, at the Waynesboro Community Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born in Pittsylvania County on June 17, 1901, a son of the late Dr. George Lee and Katie Moses Smith. He was a retired Pullman conductor with the Pullman Company.

He was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, of the Elks lodge and of the American Association of Retired Persons.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Wine Smith; one brother, W. Russell Smith, of Highland Springs; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Smith Simonson and Mrs. Kathleen Smith Baker, both of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11: a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Etter Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Harry G. Balthis. Graveside services in Riverview Cemetery will be conducted by B.P.O.E., Lodge 2270 of Waynesboro.

Active pallbearers will be members of B.P.O.E. Lodge, 2270 of Waynesboro.

The body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight.
