Built by William Byrd II (1674-1744) about 1730 on land his father William Byrd I (1652-1704) inherited from his uncle Thomas Stegge. William Byrd II was Burgess and a member of the Council, and was twice the representative of the VirginiaAssembly in London. It remained in the Byrd family until 1814, when on the death of Mary Willing, widow of William Byrd III, it was sold. The east wing, burned during the Civil War, was rebuilt and the house rehabilitated about 1900 for Mrs.Sears Ramsey. It is now the home of Mrs. Richard Crane.
