Flashbacks into the past revealed a life of hard work and achievement for Norman B. Wine when members of the Jefferson school PTA honored the school principal with a "This is Your Life" production last night.

Peppered with everything from baby pictures to "testimonials" from prominent Dayton, Ohio businessmen, Wine's life story began in Waynesboro, Augusta Co., Virginia (close to George Washington's birthplace), and ran up to his present post.

The surprise program highlighted the "Meet Your Teacher" dinner at Beth Jacob synagogue.

On hand to help in the recognition program was Dr. F. F. Schwalm, president of Manchester college, where Wine graduated in 1923. Since that time Wine has been on the board of directors for the college and has received an honorary doctor of lawsdegree from it in 1945.

Raised on a Virginia farm, Wine came to Dayton in time to be caught in the 1913 flood while working for the Aetna paper mill.

World War I meant a marriage to Grace Hodgden and a promotion as manager of the Detroit office for the Hooven Automatic Typewriter company.

But his thirst for knowledge soon won out. In 1919 he and his wife entered Manchester college, where Wine was to receive honors as president of his sophomore class, captain of a winning debate team and president of his senior class.

Realizing that education was his field, he entered the Dayton public school system and worked on his master's degree while teaching at Roosevelt high school.

His success story continued like this: 1928, appointed assistant to principal William Prinz at Emerson Junior High School, 1938, assistant superintendent of the Dayton public school under Emerson H. Landis; 1950, principal of Jeffersonelementary school.

Wine's interests fan out to include being a member of Kiwanis for 16 years, a former member of the ration board, national war relations's board, a member of goodwill Industries board of trustees and Barney Community hospital board.

His family includes a wife, Grace; a daughter, Madonna; a son-in-law, Ted and a grandson, Craig Steven Goss.

Mrs. Ben Horn, president of the Jefferson PTA, voiced the school's feelings when she said, "It's only right that we should honor Mr. Wine after all his years of service.
