Mrs. Mamie Catherine Snell, 79, of Route 2, Afton, died at 11:15 a.m. Friday in Waynesboro Community Hospital.

Mrs. Snell was a member of Hebron Babtist Church. She had been employed at the Du Pont Co. plant for eight years before she resigned in 1953.

She was the widow of Samuel Christian Snell, who died Dec. 12, 1971, and was preceded in death by one step-son, Ernest Snell, and one step-daughter, Mrs. Helen Glass.

Born in Afton May 8, 1892, she was a daughter of the late Ulysses Grant and Annie Bell Baber.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ada Fox of Route 2, Afton; three step-daughters, Mrs. W. P. (Marie) Wine of Route 1, Mrs. George (Catherine) Balsley of Waynesboro and Mrs. William (Frances) Albright of Greensboro, N.C.; one step-son CarrollA. Snell of Hudson, Fla; also one niece, one nephew and four great-nieces; 16 step-grandchildren and 19 step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hebron Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Chafee, with burial in the church cemetery.

The body will remain at the Etter funeral Home until one hour prior to the service.

When Papa married Mamie, he did it as a new mother for his six children. Mother was 13 when Ruth died and the others were younger. Frances was only three. Mamie was the true mean step-mother. She was hateful, always mean to all of them,except when Papa was at home. Then she would tell him how bad they had been to her so he would punish them. When Papa was sick the summer before he died, I sat and talked to him for a while. He told stories of some of his childhood pranks andthen, it is the only time I every heard him say anything about Mamie. He just said, "You know, some of us make terrible mistakes in our marriages, and only find out about them too late".

She must have been the world's worst cook. I remember going to Papa's for Sunday dinner. The chicken would be half cooked, the flour still white on it and her cakes were as hard as rocks.
